Castro

Flaky, creamy, not too sweet, always perfect. A must-try. The best pastel de nata in Porto.
Everyone wants the best pastel de nata in Porto, and everyone gets sent to the same tourist bakery. These are the pastéis and bakeries I actually walk out of my way for — flaky, creamy, not too sweet.

Great pastry, great croissant, great sourdough.
Great bakery with the best sourdough and croissants (French style, not Portuguese style). Modern bakery that takes bread seriously.
My top pick is Castro. Beyond the big-name chains, the small bakeries on this list are where I actually go — properly caramelised, flaky bottoms and custard that's rich without being too sweet.
A blistered, caramelised top; shatteringly crisp, flaky pastry — especially the bottom, which should never be soggy; and a warm, creamy custard that's rich but not too sweet. Always best eaten warm, ideally with an espresso.
Both cities do them brilliantly. Porto's scene is smaller but genuinely excellent — the spots on this list hold their own against any famous name in Lisbon, usually with shorter queues.
Rarely. The most-photographed spots trade on their name and you'll wait in line for a nata that's good, not great. The neighbourhood bakeries here are where locals actually go — no queue, better pastry.
